I can confirm this on a fresh 32 bit natty install. The GTK workaround
didn't work for me but I found a different workaround:

# mkdir ~/.gimp-2.6
# gimp

voila

Somehow it struggles about not being able to find the directory. Once it
exists, there's no problem.
