Hi, and thanks for your help! I've realised the reason the shift-compose trick didn't work for me before: I've been using it the wrong way. Before natty, I used to hold the Compose key down while pressing the first of the other keys, ie (compose+s),s to do the ß. I guess I now have to press them sequentially (and use the shift-compose trick), and I can write viele Grüße & merçi!
