This thread indirectly solved my problem which was that after uninstalling wine I also lost metacity and had the pain of having to manually start it each boot. I had looked at gconf-editor before but the key value of wm-gnome seemed reasonable for the window manager so I passed. After reading your dialogues I set the key to metacity and all is well. FYI Acer Aspire D255 and 10.10. Thanks.
