The same problem rose after I upgraded to Ubuntu Edgy. And I had another problem linked to this issue : my alt+tab and ctrl+alt+tab didn't work. I solved this issue by renaming all my .gnome and .gnome2 pref folders thus forcing gnome to recreate them.
