I updated my kernel to 2.6.38-10, which I had hoped would eliminate the
problem, but I just had the same freeze while the "fuzzy flakes"
screensaver was on. Going to Ctrl-Alt-F1 and using the command:

$killall gnome-screensaver

did not do anything at all. I haven't tried any other fixes yet. I use
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart X, which is really not ideal and doesn't
always work - sometimes I can see the login screen, and other times it
loads the login screen but the screen stays black. I can manoeuvre the
mouse cursor to the bottom right corner, click, and use the down button
on my keyboard to select Restart, which I have to do from memory as I
can't see anything. The computer reboots fine when I do that.
