You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Suppose you have not the necessary privileges to read and write on a
particular type of media, for example the set of files of a to-be-
mounted HDD ext4 partition, it disappears after opening (which
automounts) it through "Places > Computer."

In other words, without the required permissions to access it, its icon
there disappears from view once mounted, and does not appear on the
desktop like other mounted media would either. The icon reappears as
soon as the hard disk drive is unmounted through the "Disk Utility."
That only happens if the set of files it contains (or its main folder)
have not been properly chowned.
