Something I didn't think to ask before is to check that your printer has PS error message printing enabled.
Looking at the Lexmark T644 menus and messages manual at: http://www.lexmark.com/publications/pdfs/t640/eng/menumess.pdf there is a setting under the PostScript menu for enabling the printing of PostScript errors.
