Update Manager informed me about a new update this morning. I used
Update Manager and when it was finished I was asked to restart the
computer. (AMD64 Ubuntu 10.04LTS Gnome) After restart I gave my password
and tried to log-in. Password was accepted and few seconds later same
log-in window reappeared on the screen. When I switched to text mode I
was able to log in to my user. There, when I tried startx I got an
error message saying that the server is not available and told me that
/tmp/.X0-lock should be removed. When I did it and tried startx again I
got different error messages and could not use the graphic screen. This
problem started after the update. In previous updates I had problems
with Samsung CLX-2160 scanner/printer or flash plugins but finally for
reasons I never understood these problems disappeared after some time.
We users trust the updates and without paying any attention to what is
going on we update our systems. Before I did the update my system was
operation without any problem. After the update now I can not log in to
my user. I think there is a mismatch in certain files that I updated my
system.
