OK, I've been fooling with this file, and I think it's the problem with
the file compression that GIMP complained about ("Depreciated and
troublesome old-style JPEG compression mode"). I can import it into GIMP
and save each page as a JPG, after I wait until all the error messages
are done complaining. Then the pages are in good shape. {BTW I have
only 1 GB of memory, and when I imported all 33 pages as separate images
in Gimp, it filled the memory plus most of my swap but never crashed.}
I tried it in Windoze XP on a different machine, and image viewer
programs just bomb out, like Format Factory, which has never crashed on
me before. Gimp for Windoze can import and save it.
So this file must be a real turkey. It was written before December 2008
so it predates Windows 7. It was cobbled together from several different
Word documents.
Unfortunately I can't send the whole file because it's a proprietary
proposal, and it's a lot of megabytes. If I can split a page or two out,
I'll post that.
