Having the same issue with Xubuntu 11.10. In addition to the above,
commenting out "LOCK_SCREEN=true" in /etc/default/acpi-support also does
not work.

$ cat /etc/lsb-release 
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=11.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=oneiric
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 11.10"

$ uname -a
Linux oneiricX 3.0.0-12-generic-pae #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 16:37:17 UTC 2011 
i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
