It affects me too on Awesome WM...
When i start gnome-terminal with --hide-menubar, the menu bar still pop ups a 
few moments after terminal starts. When i press right click it's showing like 
it's not activated. Then if i activate it, and deactivate it again (using the 
right click menu on the terminal) it disappears in the end, but I can't start 
the gnome-terminal without it.

I hope i have helped... I am really looking forward to see this bug
fixed as I don't want to switch to using another terminal emulator but I
don't like the gnome one like this either...
