same here. Files (JPG) with a size of 11MB use ~100MB memory, with a size of 70MB+ use more than 1GB memory and don't use the swap (it seems so).
On the window: The application open and the borders/menu is visible. The Prozessbar can run to the end and hide. The place for the image is still black. Than the Computer freeze. The mouse are able to move the first 2-3 secounds than it freeze too. Focus a other window or change to console(tty1...6) are not possible. The Bug can reproduced. with Ubuntu 11.4 I could load this file without problems.
