The automount failure is due to hal not running.
What happens if you start hal in debugging mode, as described on the
second hal f of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingRemovableDevices ? Does
it terminate itself after a while or does it stay running?
Can you please attach the resulting log file? Thank you!
