Bug #1001554 under indicator-sound may be a duplicate of this bug. Before discovering this bug, I confirmed and added a comment to that report -- in summary, the microphone input on an eeepc (which is built- in) does not appear in the gnome-control-center "record sound from" list. However the microphone works and input volume can be adjusted with the indicator-sound dropdown slider *when an application is actively using the mic*. Please let me know if I can provide any details about my hardware that will make tracking this down easier.
