Today's aptitude update full upgrade the resolution appears to be 1280x1024 on the external display much better than 1024x768.
Do note selecting System Settings, Displays results in a loop - open, I close it, automatically open, I close it, ad nauseum. Nice to have the higher resolution back. Still have to turn the laptop display off manually. Boots at max bright no matter what.
