Tim, thanks for filing this and posting what you've figured out. I have
to admit I don't really understand gdm much at all.

We did notice some booting problems. I managed to have some success if I
booted without quiet splash. gdm then booted into the fallback mode (ie
looks like gdm 3.0). GNOME then ran in fallback mode too until I logged
out or something. I don't think it always worked quite the same way.
