Have you tried killing Shotwell from the Process Monitor? An easy way to do this from the command-line is:
$ pkill shotwell The window should disappear. When you run Shotwell after that, you should be in a new state. Can you reproduce this problem every time? Thumbnail regeneration is something we've worked on lately (as well as other problems).
