While GNOME Shell by default doesn't have desktop icons, GNOME 3.8
includes a new GNOME Classic mode which does show desktop icons by
default using Nautilus. What was removed this cycle is Nautilus handling
the desktop wallpaper which is not the same as handling icons on the
desktop.
