I have absolutely the same problem updating from 12.10 to 13.04 yesterday. After the update when I try to access the System Settings -> Sound the windows crashes and dmesg gives:
kernel: [ 101.174326] gnome-control-c[2351]: segfault at 7fff94739f28 ip 00007f79123788ca sp 00007fff94739f30 error 6 in libc-2.17.so[7f791232f000+1be000] Although, it won't open the System Settings -> Sound playback in every applications is normal and pavucontrol also works. Anyway I can't change the default device now. With 12.10 there were no problems.
