I also agree that the default resolution at the login screen is ugly.
Low resolution mirroring is bad. Windows 7 is using only the external
screen at its highest resolution at the login screen.

Also the guest session in Ubuntu uses the same ugly low resolution
mirroring by default so the whole experience is ugly for my guests
unless I change the resolution manually for them each and every time.
