Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04.2 precise

Steps:
1. Plug the HDMI cable to the laptop, and open the Sound Settings
2. Switch the output device form built-in speakers to HDMI output
3. Close the Sound Settings and play sound, make sure it's coming from the HDMI
device
4. Unplug the HDMI cable, play sound again.

Expected Results:
It should be played through the built-in speaker on the laptop.

Actual Results:
Nothing happened, and if you open the Sound Settings, the HDMI device is
removed from the devices list, but still can be seen in the "Setting for
Speakers" part on the right-hand-side (please find attachment for screen shot)
You have select the internal speaker manually to make it back to normal.
