It happens to work in Windows because you are probably using NTFS, which does actually store all directory entries in alphabetical order, and FAT stores them in the first free space, so if you create a fresh, empty directory, then add the files, that will be the order they end up in. Removing and adding more files to the directory though, will cause the order to jumble up.
