I would like to confirm this bug. But this would need more discussion.
I've seen a similiar behaviour also on LibreOffice and so on.

** Changed in: gimp (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Confirmed

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gimp

  When I close/log off Ubuntu with an edited file in The GIMP then it
  doesn't save the file.

  I would expect a dialog saying:
  "Save the changes to image 'My Image.jpg' before closing? "

  and three options: don't save, save and cancel... but instead I get
  nothing and my image gets lost.
