Two quick corrections/addenda:

1.  I'm not sure why this got categorized under gnome-terminal; I
thought I specified the "terminator" package during submission.  Sorry
for any confusion.  I'm a bit new at this.

2.  On further experimentation, I'm pretty sure terminator starts a
selection if the mouse pointer moves so much as ONE PIXEL in any
direction during a click.  So it's even more sensitive than described at
first -- looks like character cell boundaries have nothing to do with
it.  Also, the symptom can appear with any click, not just one that
brings focus to the terminal window.
