Public bug reported:

Test case:
open a text file of some size in gedit (over 15kB or so, larger the better to
see
In unity panel click on Search
The drop down menu is typically inactive & won't be for some time

While inactive go > ctrl+f opening search, search something, dismiss the search
Go back to the panel Search menu, again typically only some options now
active, find will usually remain inactive, until it does come active a new
search isn't possible thru the panel (app) menu

Note: if trying multiple times use a new file, after a bit the panel
menu will work on a previously opened file.
