I experience a similar problem when copying a large number of files (approx 700Gb) across HDD - external and internal, all NTFS formatted. Files are selected, dragged and dropped and copying starts normally. After running for some time (this varies considerably during different copying operations), Nautilus freezes, Unity becomes non-responsive and shutdown does not happen on request. Machine only shuts down on force shutdown. Seems to happen especially during copying audio files. The same issues occurs independently on four different Ubuntu 14.04 laptops (of various makes) using four different external 1Tb HDD (3x WB, 1xSeagate) and four NTFS formatted partitions on internal HDDs. Copying was tested with internal-external and external-external file transfers.
