I also don't understand under what username I am recognized and signed in. About half of the time I click on something on the panels the panels all disappear now. I can open a terminal, enter nautilus, and all re-appears; but they will all soon disappear when closing a window or doing something. As is, it is unusable and I'm back in 12.04
Again, I'm not sure if I ever made a new user or renamed mine and don't quite know how to find out.
