You have been subscribed to a public bug: After successful upgrade from kubuntu 14.10 to 15.04, the system hangs during boot and never reaches the login screen. When grub menu entry "Ubuntu, with Linux 3.19.0-15-generic (upstart)" is selected, the system boots normally. It turns out that the /etc/fstab uuids for the / and swap partitions are not correct. Once corrected and set to the values from /dev/disk/by-uuid/, booting is possible using systemd.
fstab had been edited manually in the past but there were no problems until the upgrade to 15.04.
