I have been using xscreensaver since gnome stopped using a screensaver. I dont use lock screen,and it has had no effect on gnome shell that I could determine.One way of doing it is to have screen saver in the start menu. Xscreensaver works as a stand alone and would need no patch. The way it is now you have to set it up to start at boot and most people would have trouble doing that.
