Screenshots using the PrtScn key do work in a a Wayland session on 17.10. I 
just tested it again:
  PrtScn = whole screen saved to Pictures/
  Alt+PrtScn = current window saved to Pictures/
  Shift+PtrScn = select a rectangle, then saved to Pictures/

If your home directory does not contain a Pictures directory already
then the images are saved to your home directory instead (apparently).
Please try these options and if you still can't get it working then...
