Spoke slightly too soon. It's fine on the Wayland machine, but a bit more unstable on the nvidia/xorg machine, and I seem to need to select the scale percentage twice before it properly takes effect, and it looks like under some circumstances it can revert to the state described in the original post. Well, that's probably (one reason) why it's still in staging. :-) So I guess we're already at the point where wayland is more stable than xorg. Come on nvidia!
