The following workaround works: - find the pid of the currently running process of Nautilus (there is always one, I guess for the desktop) - kill it. That makes the desktop disappears - launch Nautilus again from the Launcher. This opens a new Nautilus window and also brings back the desktop. Now even if I close the Nautilus window, the desktop remains, as expected, and now everything works as expected.
