Just wanted to follow up with some good news and maybe something you folks can use to help fix this one should it ever come around on the guitar? :) I found I was able to get Gnome to start up correctly on boot if I just add this line to the [daemon] section of /etc/gdm3/custom.conf: WaylandEnable=false
I added that as a comment to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1796614 If I have more time I'd love to dig into the C code and figure out what about Wayland detection is failing - the Alienware 17 R5 has the Nvidia GTX 1080 as well as the Intel graphics chipset for longer batter life when not gaming / doing high end 3D. I wonder if the Wayland detection is getting fouled up on that? Anyway, I am loving 18.10 now that I have the issues ironed out.
