Yes if you're using Xorg (the default "Ubuntu" session) then mouse
cursor movement is done by the Xorg process so it will keep moving even
if gnome-shell was frozen.

I meant that you should run 'top' before the problem happens and leave
it running so you can watch that window.

When the problem happens is it only keyboard input that freezes or
window contents too?
