I switched to KDE to have a look at it, by installing KDE Neon from the PPAs. Otherwise the same environment. The slow suspend doesn't happen in plasma, it suspends in five seconds, while still suspending properly (including open VMWare virtual machines). So it's not simply Chrome, the bug needs gnome as well.
