Public bug reported:

All of the desktop icons (and conky, etc) suddenly vanish after I drag
and drop something into a desktop folder (typically dragging selected
text from chrome browser, which normally creates a text file in the
folder).

Does not trigger the bug every time, but quite frequently. Once the bug
triggers the icon area is useless and requires a system restart to
restore the icons and normal functioning.

This is a new XPS laptop with Ubuntu 18.04 freshly installed (and little
else modified).
