I was able to get my computer to reliably shutdown by doing two things:
1. Update the intramfs:
$ sudo update-initramfs -u
I'm not sure why this was necessary, since I have the default 21.04
kernel:
5.11.0-16-generic
2. Add `acpi=force` to /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force
modprobe.blacklist=nouveau"
...and update grub:
$ sudo update-grub
I'm not sure why this is necessary, since I have a newer BIOS.
This has never been necessary for prior versions of Ubuntu.
Nevertheless, my laptop will consistently not shut down without this
parameter.
