Yes. The current_desktop_name is being set from data/unity.desktop.in.in file. Please look at the patch in debian/patches/ubuntu/ubuntu-session.patch. As for changes between impish and jammy, It seems now the object path has changed in gsm-manager.c ? From org.gnome.Shell to org.gnome.Shell.desktop? Though not sure that would affect this.
