Further context that might be of use: This machine was upgraded from 20.04 LTS via do-release-upgrade -d a few days after the stable release of 22.04 LTS. When it was running 20.04 LTS, I was using the vanilla Gnome 3 shell package, which was still installed at the point of upgrade.
