The 'use-experimental-views' option appears to have been the problem. I reset it, and the problem seems to have gone away.
I do not think I explicitly set that option, so I don't know how it got turned on. But this machine has been upgraded in place several times, so it may have been something that occurred years ago. No matter, it appears to be working correctly now, in several different directories & using several different zoom levels.
