I'm using Feisty, and the problem's still there in updates as of the evening of 30th March.
If it's an X-server issue then it might be relevant that I'm using Intel G965 graphics. I wonder whether it's a termcap issue; is gnome-terminal supposed to emulate TERM=xterm?
