After an entire day of fiddling and swearing, I went to look in the logfiles,
which included some line about PAM: 18:39:01 gdm-session-wor: PAM adding faulty
module: pam_sss.so
The absolute last thing I had done before the first reboot that gave me this
issue, was install the software for the Belgian eid, which apparently breaks
something in the keyring, leading to this very unusual behavior. My bad, false
alarm.
