Connecting the dock without monitor is fine. Then connecting the DisplayPort 
connector:

[...] continues this way, until more alarming messages start showing up, 
"gnome-shell[2767]: WL: error in client communication (pid 151710)" and finally 
"gnome-shell[2767]: WL: error in client communication (pid 2767)" and  journal 
is added as attachment. Eventually I'm removing the monitor cable again and 
things come to a rest.
