Every few days gnome shell locks up with lots of errors in the syslog, usually
ending with endlessly repeating:

I had assumed that this was an incompatibility with the Workspace Matrix
extension which I normally use, however I've been running with that
disabled for the last few days and still encountered the error. Only
enable extensions were the built in Desktop Icons NG, Ubuntu
AppIndicators and Ubuntu Dock.
When the lock up occurs, most window management ceases to function, and
attempts to restart gnome shell fail causing a log-out.
