The login screen will never mention "on Wayland" unless Xorg is the
default session type (for Nvidia systems only). So you should see:
"Ubuntu" for the Wayland session
"Ubuntu on Xorg" for the Xorg session.
I don't think there's any bug here. Especially since your
ShellJournal.txt shows a Wayland session starting just fine. But if you
have any ongoing issues then check to see if something has crashed by
looking in /var/crash/
