**Summary**
GNOME Shell crashes reproducibly when disconnecting an external monitor
in a Wayland session. The same hardware configuration is stable under
Xorg.
**System**
* Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
* GNOME Shell 46.0
* Mutter 46.2
* Linux 6.17.0-35-generic
* Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 Gen 2
* AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840HS with Radeon 780M graphics
**Hardware configuration**
The laptop is connected to a powered USB-C hub for power delivery only.
No display is connected through the hub.
The external monitor is connected directly to the laptop's second USB-C
port using a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter and HDMI cable.
**Steps to reproduce**
1. Log in to a Wayland session ("Ubuntu").
2. Connect the external monitor.
3. Disconnect the monitor from the laptop.
**Expected result**
The desktop should continue running on the internal display after the
external monitor is disconnected.
**Actual result**
Approximately three seconds after disconnecting the monitor, GNOME Shell
crashes and the session returns to the GDM login screen. The system
itself does not reboot and remains accessible via a text console.
**Additional observations**
The crash is reproducible.
The journal immediately before the crash contains monitor-management
assertions including:
* `meta_monitor_manager_get_logical_monitor_from_number`
* `meta_workspace_get_work_area_for_monitor`
followed by GNOME Shell terminating with SIGSEGV.
As a comparison, I logged into **Ubuntu on Xorg** using the identical
hardware, kernel, cables, monitor and USB-C configuration. I repeatedly
disconnected and reconnected the monitor without any crash or other
problem.
This suggests the issue is specific to the Wayland/Mutter monitor hot-
unplug path rather than the hardware or graphics driver in general.
