Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 24.04 (Linux Mint base, noble-updates), the Synaptics
fingerprint reader 06cb:00fc fails to initialize under fprintd after
upgrading from kernel 6.14.0-37-generic to 7.0.0-29-generic (package
linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04).

Symptom:

$ fprintd-list "$USER"
No devices available

journalctl/fprintd log on start:

fprintd[...]: Ignoring device due to initialization error: endpoint
stalled or request not supported

Device enumerates correctly at the USB/kernel level (dmesg):

usb 3-6: New USB device found, idVendor=06cb, idProduct=00fc, bcdDevice=
0.00

— no errors at the kernel/USB layer, so the failure is in libfprint's
communication with the device, likely triggered by a USB stack
(xhci_hcd) change in the 7.0.0 kernel.

Reproduction:

Fresh Ubuntu 24.04 / Linux Mint install with libfprint-2-2 / libfprint-2-tod1
(version 1:1.94.7+tod1-0ubuntu5~24.04.8) and fingerprint enrolled and working
under kernel 6.14.0-37-generic.
Upgrade via apt to kernel 7.0.0-29-generic (or later hwe-24.04 kernel).
Reboot into the new kernel.
Run fprintd-list "$USER" → No devices available.
Reboot back into 6.14.0-37-generic → device works normally, fingerprint still
enrolled.

Environment:

libfprint-2-2 / libfprint-2-tod1: 1:1.94.7+tod1-0ubuntu5~24.04.8
fprintd: 1.94.3-1
Kernel affected: 7.0.0-29-generic
Kernel working: 6.14.0-37-generic
Device: Synaptics, Inc. 06cb:00fc
Secure Boot: disabled (ruled out as a factor)

Impact: Loss of fingerprint login and sudo fingerprint auth after a
routine kernel upgrade, with no clear error pointing to the kernel as
the cause.

** Affects: libfprint (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
