On Intel graphics, kernel 7.0.0-14-generic, running Mutter 51 main with
the fix from comment #25, I can reproduce a ShmemHugePages leak per the
original description. Although it seems to max out at around 500MB for
me, it's clearly related to the screen being locked while some window is
animating in the background.

So right now I can only reproduce something closer to the original i915
leak that was reported at the top. And if the aforementioned Mutter fix
in 51.0 helps on amdgpu then we need someone to open a new bug about
that please.
