You have been subscribed to a public bug:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop fails to stop gdm on the 7.04 amd64 beta
livecd but sudo kill `cat /var/run/gdm.pid` does.
After running the gdm stop script, nothing happens: the gui remains
running and fully operational.
