Since I really needed my email, I used RLTH and hand scanned where the problem was, as well as plenty of searching. I thined down the mailbox file removing a lot of rubbish. However, this had no effect. The one thing that helped was removing the CMETA file as suggested on defect #17839 which seemed to work very well. This may have been what I was experiencing.
